First-generation college student Jhinisha Mills endured the challenges of the pandemic to complete her time at USM and then went on to success at Florida A&M University.

Jhinisha started at USM as a recent high school graduate, and her time here helped prepare her for the rigor of her university experience at FAMU in Tallahassee, Fla.
Jhinisha credits USM's personalized approach to teaching to helpinf her advance her education journey. She recalls a story in her early time at USM where an instructor went above and beyond to help her excel at making presentations, spending several hours to help her improve her work.
"I got a call from my teacher stating she wanted to book a one-on-one class with me to help me correct my mistakes. I remember this vividly, that meeting lasted for 4 hours because not only were my mistakes being corrected but the teacher gave me a whole class on how to make a ppt presentation look more presentable. From that first semester until now, I have used whatever she said and did my presentations exactly as I have been taught and I never had to sit in a 4-hour class again."
Jhinisha is a proud USM alumna who praises the university for caring and dedication to her education experience.
Jhinisha says, "Do not look at USM as a setback because you did not go abroad right away to further your studies. Use all resources provided at USM because they will then grant you even more opportunities or other colleges to attend that you might not be able to be accepted into coming directly out of high school."
