Educator Ange Jessurun led guests at USM on a globe-spanning, multi-generational journey through her family tree Wednesday in a conversation about her new book, Faya Lobi: 200 Years of Fiery Love in the Diaspora.
The book is both a celebration of her family's story across generations and continents including Asia and South America and an exploration of the sometimes arduous journey that is required of love and of people seeking change in their lives. She traces her roots through the era of slavery and the post-colonial and into present day in her book.
"I didn't write the book. The book wrote itself," Ms. Jessurun said of the process of compiling photos and stories and letters from her parents and grandparents and producing the book.
It was USM's final lecture this year.
