The team at USM is proud to announce an upcoming event that promises to unravel the intricacies of Caribbean political history. On June 24th, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, the university will host esteemed sociologist Linden Lewis for a presentation of his latest book, "Forbes Burnham: The Life and Times of the Comrade Leader." Forbes Burnham, a towering figure in Guyana's history, led the nation to independence in 1966 and steered its course as head of state until 1985.

Linden Lewis, Professor of Sociology at Bucknell University, offers a comprehensive examination of Burnham's leadership, blending nationalist rhetoric, socialist policies, and Pan-Africanist philosophies. Joining Lewis are distinguished scholars Alissa Trotz and Anton Allahar. Trotz, Professor of Caribbean Studies at the University of Toronto, brings her expertise in transnational feminist studies and geopolitical tensions surrounding oil extractivism in Guyana. Allahar, Professor of Sociology at the University of Western Ontario, contributes insights into Caribbean identity, race relations, and post-conflict resolutions.

Organized by Island(er)s at the Helm, a collaborative research project funded by the Dutch Research Council and the Royal Institute of Caribbean and Southeast Asian Studies (KITLV), this event underscores the University of St. Martin's dedication to academic inquiry and cultural exchange. "We are thrilled to welcome Linden Lewis and our esteemed panelists to the University of St. Martin," says Dr. Antonio Carmona Baez, President of USM. "This event offers a unique opportunity for our community to engage with leading scholars and explore the complexities of Caribbean political history."

The presentation will take place in the USM Lecture Hall (Room 202) and promises to be a thought-provoking evening for students, faculty, and members of the public alike.
