Successful Public Lecture by Island(er)s at the Helm

The event was met with overwhelming attendance, filling the venue to capacity. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with the speakers and ask questions following the presentations, fostering meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas.
Dr. Guadeloupe, along with his esteemed colleagues Dr. Gregory Richardson, Harold Kelly, and Riddhi Samtani, delivered an enlightening presentation that shed light on the complex interplay between culture, society, and climate in today's world. Through their research, they explored how these factors intersect and influence one another, offering valuable insights into the challenges faced by communities in the Caribbean and beyond.

The lecture, held on USM campus, attracted a diverse audience, including the Honorable Governor of St. Martin, Ajamu Baly, President of the University of St. Martin Board of Directors, Mrs. Valerie Giterson-Pantophlet, Acting President Wycliffe Smith, Dean of Academic Dr. Gale Rigobert, Members of Parliament Sjamira Rooseburg and Ludmilla de Weever, as well as USM students, staff, faculty, policymakers, government officials, private business owners, and members of the general public.

Dr. Richardson, a Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in the intersection of music, culture, and climate challenges, provided captivating insights into the cultural dynamics surrounding climate events. He demonstrated how music serves as a reflection of societal experiences, showcasing popular songs that emerged in the aftermath of hurricanes, such as "Who Loot Loot."

The success of this public lecture underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex societal issues. By bringing together academia, policymakers, and the public, USM continues to serve as a hub for knowledge exchange and community engagement.
