USM Hosts Webinars on Senior Rights

October 17, 2024

In observance of the annual International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, University of St. Martin (USM) is joining forces with regional advocates on ageing to raise awareness through webinars.
The webinars, titled “For the Rights of Seniors,” will bring together leaders and representatives from senior organizations across the region to reflect on how poverty continues to limit the realization of their rights in this joint effort with the Regional Coordination of Civil Society Organizations on Aging and Old Age (CORV). These virtual events will connect senior advocacy leaders from across Latin America and the Caribbean to confront one of the most pressing issues facing the region: the intersection of poverty and the full realization of human rights for the elderly.

USM has a history of commemorating this day in collaboration with the St. Martin Anti-Poverty Platform, a local rights and advocacy group that supports expanding opportunities for vulnerable residents and diminishing the effects of poverty. This year, the university is extending its efforts by hosting these webinars not only to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty but also to look ahead to International Human Rights Day on December 10.

Over the past two decades, CORV has tirelessly advocated for the protection of the rights of older people, particularly since the adoption of the 2002 Madrid Political Declaration and International Action Plan on Aging. The advocacy network has consistently emphasized that seniors in Latin America and the Caribbean suffer the worst of poverty’s devastating effects. CORV argues that poverty eradication alone is not enough; the full realization of human rights is essential for a more equitable and sustainable future.

The discussion will focus on actionable strategies to accelerate the fulfillment of these rights, recognizing that time is running out for many elderly citizens who have already waited too long.
USM will utilize the insights from these discussions as part of an ongoing comparative research project spearheaded by Drs. Raymond Jessurun, USM’s research coordinator. This initiative, in partnership with the St. Martin Science & Research Institute and the CORV network, is examining the status and future of human rights for seniors in Latin America and the Caribbean. The research will examine the effectiveness of and determine ways to guarantee human rights efforts for seniors in the region in the more than seven decades since the world agreed to declarations on universal human rights.

USM remains committed to research that advances the state of residents locally and within the region and will be embarking on research projects in the areas of expanding education in the coming years. The university will continue to celebrate its 35th anniversary this year as it works to expand its mission to support a more inclusive and empowered society.
