USM Advocates Inclusivity: Embracing the Special Needs Education Policy for a Brighter Future.
On Monday, October 24th, 2023, The University of St. Martin (USM) participated as one of several stakeholders in reviewing the draft of the Special Needs Education (SNE) policy, initiated by the Department of Education. Attending on behalf of the USM were Mr. Wycliffe Smith and Dean, Dr. Rigobert. USM is pleased to see the progress that has been made with the drafting of the SNE policy, as it speaks to ensuring that we live up to our commitment “no child will be left behind”!
The discussions were insightful and fruitful. In anticipation of the implementation of that policy, USM continues to partner with key stakeholders to ensure that our teachers are adequately equipped to deliver to a demographic group of our society, that is very close to our hearts: students with exceptionalities.
Among the notable components of this policy is the extent to which it speaks to the needs of not only students with learning difficulties, but very importantly, also caters for those who are talented and gifted. Indeed, all children vary in their natural ability to learn, hence we in the education sector are duty bound to cater to their varying needs. The USM applauds the Department of Education and all the stakeholders who have played an instrumental role in ensuring that the policy has come this far, and eagerly anticipates its full implementation next year.
