On Wednesday, December 6th, USM hosted a symposium as part of its activities during the United Nations' 16 days of activism, aimed at raising awareness of gender-based violence. The event proved to be an insightful platform where diverse perspectives converged to address this critical societal issue. Notably in attendance were the Honorary Excellency Governor Ajamu Baly, accompanied by his Aide-de-Camp to the Governor Kapitein F. Hartgers, among other dignitaries such as Prosecutor Mr. Peyma Sholeh.

Dr. Rigobert urged attendees to embrace diverse perspectives and prioritize inclusivity in addressing the various manifestations of violence.

Throughout the symposium, dynamic professionals and practitioners presented insights into combating gender-based violence. Ms. Patricia Richardson from the General Detective Department of the Police Force and Mrs. Chantale Groeneveldt, Division Head of Community Development, Family & Humanitarian Affairs & Women’s Desk, shared interventions and policy frameworks to address gender violence. The newly appointed prosecutor highlighted the office's role in combating GBV, while Ms. Nkosazana Illis shared the foundation's journey.

The panelists commended community-based interventions and legal changes to dismantle structures perpetuating gender-based violence. The discussions, followed by a dynamic Q&A session, enriched the symposium's theme. Dr. Rigobert emphasized unity for a violence-free society.

In closing, Ms. Britney Frederick, a Social Work student, conveyed gratitude to the participants. Notably, Ms. Lysanne Charles, the MC and a researcher at USM, delivered a moving poem, highlighting women's regained 'voice.'
