USM twenty-seventh commencement ceremony

A total of twenty-six graduates received their degrees. These included the Associate of Arts in General Liberal Arts, Associate of Arts in Business which were conferred by USM President Dr. Antonio Carmona Baez and USM Dean of Academics Dr. Rolinda Carter.
Pond Island - USM The twenty-seventh commencement ceremony for graduates of the University of St. Martin (USM) took place on Saturday, June 26, 2020. The commencement was held at the Belair Community Center, where the team and staff of USM ensured that Covid-19 health and safety regulations were all met and maintained throughout the evening. All graduates and persons attending kept a social distance and wore facemasks throughout the entire ceremony. The event was also streamed live for extended staff, faculty members, and family and friends of the graduates. The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) counterparts also joined the ceremony virtually. Over 650 households watched the commencement exercises online. Speaking to the current circumstances, the chosen theme of this year's graduation ceremony focused on Equity, Health, and Sustainability.

This year's celebration was that all the Business graduates received their Business and Technology Education Council Level 4 Higher Certificate in their respective discipline. Due to the pandemic, the UVI@USM degrees were conferred virtually by UVI President Dr. David Hall. These included the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Master of Arts in Education.
USM shared six awards during the ceremony. Iyanla Richardson received the Award for Academic Excellence for earning the highest GPA of the USM graduating class. Edrige Parisien earned the President's Award, and Jameson Pierre-Louis received the Board of Directors Award. Janira Samuel and Natasha Abraham earned the Best-in-Class Award for receiving the highest academic grade point average as an undergraduate and graduate, respectively, at the UVI@USM. The graduates also elected Mr. Jason Lee Daley with the Faculty of the year award.
Among those in attendance were the Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports Affairs drs. Rodolphe E. Samuel, fellow dignitaries, staff, Faculty, management of the university, and well-wishers. The evening was kept vibrant with the entertainment by Mr. Nacio Sutton from Sweet Pan Entertainment. In addition, a combination of past pictures and videos was shown throughout the evening to reflect the students' journey. Those who missed the ceremony can find photos and videos of the evening on USM social media accounts. Former alumni members also contributed to the evening; Marcillia Henry made an appearance as the keynote speaker addressing three principles; equity, health, and sustainability, something that all graduates can take with them and apply for their future jobs and studies, whether in education, business, or hospitality. Ms. Ria Khudan addressed the class with an induction speech to welcome the new class of alumni. Alex Shuja Reiph kept the evening flowing as he was the master of ceremony.
